The Care of Exterior Signs – Treat Them Like Your Car!
Exterior signs are a big investment. Your sign represents your brand and your business. Keep your sign looking new with a regular maintenance schedule, it’s as easy as washing a car!
Clean exterior signs by hand if possible. Wash them from the top down. Flush the exterior sign with clear water to loosen dirt particles. Clean the surface with a mild liquid detergent and water solution, using a soft cloth or sponge. Use an automotive shampoo. It contains wax that will help to protect and preserve the surface of your signage. Once all debris has been removed from the sign, gently rinse the surface with clean water and allow to dry naturally. It is not always an option to hand wash exterior signs, power washing can be used instead. Use caution with pressure washers! Aggressive washing can cause significant damage to your signage. Try to avoid getting water under your graphics. Follow these simple guidelines to help preserve your exterior sign:
Use a pressure of 2000 psi or less
Limit water temperature to 180 degrees Fahrenheit or less
Hold the nozzle at least 12 inches away from and perpendicular to the graphic
With proper care and maintenance, your exterior signs and graphics will last a considerable length of time. Removing dirt, dust, and environmental contaminants on a regular basis can significantly improve the appearance and longevity of your exterior signs. Clean signs superficially as often as possible. Plan on an in-depth washing quarterly. Put it on the calendar so you won’t forget!
